Uninstalling Media Engine destroys Windows XP system.
A week or so ago I was uninstalling your media engine from my laptop, running Windows XP professional. After uninstalling it, the system started to behave strange, many protection errors have been displayed and so on (the task manager only showed strange symbols and not running processes anymore), and after reboot, black screen and message:
“Windows could not start because following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>/system32/hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file.”
This was the end of my system, cold not reinstall, repair, did many tricks but none helped, so I was forced to wipe out my hard drive and install a new system. Lost lots of time, lucky I did not lost data.
To continue my work I have used another machine for development and I have installed there media engine, and today I was uninstalling the media engine on this machine, and … after reboot…, black screen and same “hal.dll” message as above.
So I do assume that this “issue” is related to your media engine un-installation process. To say the least: This issue should be addressed immediately. Maybe you can give an idea how to recover my system since this time 3 days of work are at stake. Right now we are very discouraged and needed to issue a warning to our customers who are testing the product right now to not to de-install the phone. You can understand that this is causing lots of potential problems. Please advice.

juice,
We didn’t mean to make it sound as though we do not believe you. We definitely do… don’t worry. We just have not received a report of this kind up until now.
I looked up your previous versions and guess what – they used the old installer technology we just stopped using at the end of 2006. It was based on Microsoft Windows installer technology and to say the least, it sucked trying to maintain it.
You must immediately start using your upgraded v5.12.3.13 install images!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do not use your previous Windows installer based setup images or redistribution packages any longer. Toss them out.
With the new media engine setup images, it is much simpler, cleaner and probably much more robust. We will be working tomorrow so we will monitor this forum for your feedback.
By the way, regarding your previous install images:

Right now we are very discouraged and needed to issue a warning to our customers who are testing the product right now to not to de-install the phone.

Did you experience the Windows XP uninstall “blowout” as the result of using the “redistribution installer image” or the development install version of the product?
We will wait for further posts,
