when I try and dial I am getting an error:

SipOutgoingCallDigestAuthenticationRequired

although i have already sucessfully registered with my asterisk server.

I can dial out using xten's x-lite software with my asterisk box ok.

any ideas?!

Look up SipOutgoingCallDigestAuthenticationRequired in the developer's reference. It will explain what it means.
