Hi,
Does LanScape VOIP Media Engine include any QoS features for SIP communication?
Regards,
Alex

Hi alexrch,
The answer is yes and no.
We are constantly reevaluating the need for additional Qos where RTP data flows are concerned. When we think of Qos, we focus on 3 particular areas: Direct RTP packet management, monitoring RTP packet stream characteristics using RTCP and direct media path control using RSVP.
At the moment, the Media Engine uses RTP packet information (type 1: sequence numbers, time stamps, jitter computations etc) to perform direct media management at the receiving end of a call. Such things as jitter compensation, packet sequencing and packet loss are handled automatically by the Media Engine. These functions have been developed to be adaptive and generally operate well for most network environments. As with everything, there are absolute limitations as to what can be handled.
We do not yet implement RTCP or RSVP in the product. Unofficially, we are leaning toward integrating RSVP in a future release of the product to enable media path management through network elements. If we take this route, our feeling is that RTPC may add little benefit.
We would like to get your thoughts (and other’s VOIP user’s thoughts) on this topic. So please feel free to post your ideas or concerns as required.
Repost as necessary,
Support

alexrch,
Some additional information:
Sometimes our (very good) support personnel are not privy to the absolute "up to date" consensus on our cutting edge project path. We are working to implement Qos capabilities directly in transmitted UDP media packets as they are constructed by the media engine and transmitted via UDP. Just to let you know that we have other customers that have similar concerns/desires for this capability.
If you have specific Qos concerns, please do not hesitate to post and engineering willl monitor this thread for your replies.
Tim
